Black Earth Equine Importation
Why import a horse when you can buy them here? That is a good question! The most heard reason is simply, "Selection." Many European breeds, such as the Friesian, are categorized as Rare Breeds. While there are many breeders in the United States for these types of horses, there are still more overseas. And, since the quantity is not so limited "over there," the prices tend to be a bit lower - even for horses with advanced training. Which means that extra money left over after buying your horse can pay for it's importation!
If you don't fall in love with a Black Earth Friesian, we encourage you to look to the Netherlands or Europe for your new mount or foundation of your breeding program. If you are interested in other breeds, we can still help you - just let us know what you need.
Let us help you bring your dream horse to you! We are experienced in all the necessary procedures for importing horses from the Netherlands. And, once your horse is on American soil, we will transport it to you safely and securely!
What goes on between there and here...
When you purchase a horse from Europe, your horse will have to go through many standard exporting and importing procedures, such as the following:
- Blood tests for diseases such as Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), Piroplasmosis, Glanders, and Dourine. If your horse has been to Russia, Southern Europe or the South of France, pre-export testing is suggested.
- Quarantine for as little as 2 days, or as much as 6 weeks, for mares and stallions more than 2 years old, upon arrival in the U.S., in a CEM quarantine facility. The horse must be taken to the officially prescribed farm in a sealed vehicle.
- Importation of mares generally takes a minimum of about one month. Before export, they must have negative CEM swabs from clitoris fossa and clitoris sinus. Upon arrival in the United States, the testing must be repeated. Each procedure requires about 14 days processing time.
- Importation of stallions generally takes closer to six weeks. They must test negative from CEM swabs from fossa glandis, sinus urethralis and from the surface of prepuce. Again, this process takes about 14 days. A stallion must also cover two mares and undergo further testing along with the two covered mares. This process takes between 30 and 45 days.
With our experience, we can further explain importation and walk you through the details. We have all the necessary importation paperwork and can coordinate all testing and sample transport. (Samples taken must reach the laboratory within 48 hours of being taken by a veterinarian.) Once your horse reaches the United States and is released from quarantine, we can bring it to you!
